Pickup was hired by the city of New Rochelle in October 2014 as its deputy commissioner of public works. “He performed very well as the deputy [commissioner],” said New Rochelle City Manager Chuck Strome, who declined to comment on Tergis’ resignation.

Despite the interim title, Strome said it’s Pickup’s call if he wants to seek out the permanent role.

“I have full confidence he can handle the job,” Strome said.

Prior to joining New Rochelle, Pickup had a lengthy stay in the city of Rye until his career became intertwined with ongoing controversies.

Pickup resigned from his position as city manager in April 2014 in the wake of several troubling conflicts, most notably a scandal at the city-owned Rye Golf Club, where the club’s general manager, Scott Yandrasevich, who worked under Pickup, was convicted of falsifying documents and stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars. Yandrasevich was released on parole last month after serving less than a year in state prison.

The commissioner position is expected to be filled by fall, according to New Rochelle officials.
