Ursuline falls to two-time champs in opener

It took Mamaroneck just 63 seconds into the start of the 2025 season to score their first goal of the gear, and if Wednesday’s game was any indication, there will be plenty more to come.

On Sept. 3, the back-to-back New York State champion Tigers kicked off their title defense in impressive fashion, getting an early goal from Lily Brickman to set the tone en route to an 11-0 romp over Ursuline.

Mamaroneck takes on Ursuline in Sept. 3 in the field hockey season opener. The Tigers posted an 11-0 win over the Koalas.

Mamaroneck  dominated time of possession in the season opener, tallying a whopping 33 shots on the afternoon, Brickman and Talia Grill each finished with three goals and two assists, while Lexi Suman and Lucy Kaplan both netted two goals in their season debut, as the Tigers picked up right where they left off last year, when they ran the table with a perfect 22-0 record.

The fact that the Tigers once again appear to be the team to beat in Class A should come as no surprise. Despite losing All-State standouts Catherine D’Arcy and Ruby Pearson to graduation, Mamaroneck returns a host of talent, including four All-State selections in Brickman, Suman, Lucy Kaplan and Emma Kirwin.

Senior Mia Radovich—one of five captains on the team—said it’s a thrill to be in a position to defend a state title and explained that the veterans on the team are fully aware of their place in the storied program’s legacy, even thought the players know that another state title isn’t something that will just be handed to them

“It’s really exciting that we get to be a part of such a great team and we’re excited for the season,” said Radovich. “But we know we have to take things one game at a time.”

Fellow captain Emma Kirwin added the the rebuild is simply part of the process and that she and the rest of the veterans have been pleased with the way Mamaroneck is able to replenish its ranks each year.

“We definitely lost some really good players to graduation, but a lot of the younger girls have been stepping up,” said Kirwin. “We’ve been working hard all summer to get back to how we finished last year.”

The Tigers (1-0) will certainly test themselves during the year, with a schedule that includes a number of high profile games against powers from Section 1 and beyond, including Lakeland, Rye, Horace Greeley and Greenwich.

Suman—one of five Tiger captains—said that when it comes to expectations and long-term goals, two of Mamaroneck’s defining characteristics throughout the years have been an attention to detail and strong chemistry.

“I think it just comes down to working hard in practice every single day and taking it one step at a time,” said Suman. “Connecting to each other on and off the field is going to help us a lot this season.”
